Same email for two contacts now combining into one and losing contact information

I am updating some donor data in preparation for a large manual tax receipt job that I am working on. As I am updating some donor information I have run into an issue where the donor is already in our system but there is no email in their contact. When I go to add in the email address, if that address has already been entered into the system under a different name, ie. if they work for the same business so have a shared email account, Zeffy automatically combines the two contacts into one. When I re-enter the contact that has been removed they are like a brand new contact and their tax receipt is under the other contact. I don't know if there is a way to move the receipt back to the correct contact??? Also, it would be better to have a pop-up warning saying that email address has already been used, that would avoid the combining of two separate contacts.
