Memberships - Members are being duplicated when their membership renews.

When a member's account automatically renews their monthly membership, their name is duplicated on the "members" list. I now have an inaccurate member count and have to manually count/remove duplicate names to get the "real" member number. Can we get a way to sort/filter lists to show only active memberships or only display a list of members and not a list of transactions?

I think it would make sense if member numbers were attached to the contact rather than just to a specific campaign. We don't want to have to constantly reissue member numbers to members every year, especially when we rely on such things for determining discounts, perks, etc. Further to that, the ability to manually assign member numbers would be highly desirable.
