I'm selling tickets to an event for $250, which is not tax deductible. I'm giving people the option to make an additional donation, which is deductible. The tax receipt is very confusing. In large type at the top, it says "Donation receipt for [total amount paid]." Then, in bold type: "This receipt acknowledges your donation in the amount of [total paid] on [date].' It's only in the very small type (I literally have to enlarge it on my screen to read it) that is says that only a portion is deductible, and even then it's not very clear. For my event it says "The fair market value of "Spring 2024 retreat - Carol Blotter: 1x Standard (+20 § donation)" is $250.00, and only the portion of your donation that exceeds this fair market value may be deducted." I understand what is supposed to be deductible in this case and it took me a long time to first see this fine print and then figure out what it meant. At the very least, the word "Donation" should not be used to indicate the total paid, and this fine print needs to be larger. It would be better if it could be worded more clearly, for example: Event ticket amount: $250, Donation amount: $20.
